     Sarah Crowther Haigh was born on 9 August 1849 at Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Hooper Haigh and Catherine Mallon Badger. Sarah Crowther Haigh married Joseph Boykin Underwood on 25 January 1866 at Fayetteville, North Carolina. Sarah Crowther Haigh died on 31 May 1905 at Fayetteville, North Carolina, at age 55.

     William Hooper Haigh was born on 3 October 1823 at Hillsboro, North Carolina. He married Catherine Mallon Badger, daughter of George Edmund Badger and Mary Brown Polk, on 6 May 1846 at Raleigh, North Carolina. William Hooper Haigh died on 27 June 1870 at Fayetteville, North Carolina, at age 46.

     Catherine Mallon Badger was born on 9 August 1827 at Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the daughter of George Edmund Badger and Mary Brown Polk. Catherine Mallon Badger married William Hooper Haigh on 6 May 1846 at Raleigh, North Carolina. Catherine Mallon Badger died on 4 July 1905 at Fayetteville, North Carolina, at age 77.

     George Edmund Badger was born on 17 April 1795 at New Bern, North Carolina. He married Mary Brown Polk, daughter of William Polk and Sarah Hawkins, on 9 November 1826 at Raleigh, North Carolina. George Edmund Badger died on 11 May 1866 at Raleigh, North Carolina, at age 71.

     Her married name was Badger. Mary Brown Polk was born on 1 September 1808 at Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Polk and Sarah Hawkins. Mary Brown Polk married George Edmund Badger on 9 November 1826 at Raleigh, North Carolina. Mary Brown Polk died on 1 March 1834 at Raleigh, North Carolina, at age 25.

     William Polk was born on 9 July 1758 at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Hawkins, daughter of Philemon Hawkins and Lucy Davis, on 1 January 1801 at Raleigh, North Carolina. William Polk died on 4 January 1834 at Raleigh, North Carolina, at age 75.

     Sarah Hawkins was born on 6 March 1784 at Warren County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Philemon Hawkins and Lucy Davis. Sarah Hawkins married William Polk on 1 January 1801 at Raleigh, North Carolina. Sarah Hawkins died on 10 December 1843 at Raleigh, North Carolina, at age 59.

     Philemon Hawkins was born on 3 December 1752 at Warren County, North Carolina. He married Lucy Davis, daughter of Jonathan Davis and Winifred Duke, on 31 August 1775 at Warren County, North Carolina. Philemon Hawkins died on 28 January 1833 at Warren County, North Carolina, at age 80.

     Lucy Davis was born on 9 July 1759 at Granville County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Jonathan Davis and Winifred Duke. Lucy Davis married Philemon Hawkins on 31 August 1775 at Warren County, North Carolina. Lucy Davis died on 29 September 1807 at Warren County, North Carolina, at age 48.

     Jonathan Davis married Winifred Duke, daughter of William Duke Jr. and Mary Green.

     Winifred Duke died at Wake County, North Carolina. She was born circa 1748 at Granville County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duke Jr. and Mary Green. Winifred Duke married Jonathan Davis.

     Mary Green was born circa 1720 at Surry County, Virginia. She married William Duke Jr., son of William Duke and NN---- (pos. Thamar) NN----, in 1742 at Brunswick County, Virginia.

     William Duke Jr. was born in 1721 at Brunswick County, Virginia. He was the son of William Duke and NN---- (pos. Thamar) NN----. William Duke Jr. married Mary Green in 1742 at Brunswick County, Virginia. William Duke Jr. died in 1793 at Warren County, North Carolina.

     NN---- (pos. Thamar) NN---- was born in 1703 at Brunswick County, Virginia. She married William Duke in 1719 at Brunswick County, Virginia.² NN---- (pos. Thamar) NN---- died in September 1728 at Brunswick County, Virginia.

     William Duke was born in 1701 at Brunswick County, Virginia. He married NN---- (pos. Thamar) NN---- in 1719 at Brunswick County, Virginia.³ William Duke died in 1775 at Bute County, North Carolina.

When I began working on this, it rapidly became clear that Evelyn Duke Brandenberger had made wonderful contributions to Duke research, but had allowed her fondness for the Duke-Byrd connection to push her out considerably in front of her data. For example, it is often repeated that Wm. Byrd took William Duke on his survey of the VA/NC line, when in fact Byrd's diary (both the public and private versions) has been in print for decades and clearly shows that it not true. Basically the documentary evidence for the connection did not add up, but it was the yDNA evidence that put the final nails in the coffin of this hypothesis. The yDNA study is reported at:

If you go to the "Earliest Documented Ancestors" link at the bottom of the homepage, you'll see that in Group 2 that William Duke of Brunswick Co VA and Warren Co NC is an excellent yDNA match for individuals whom we know to be descended from John Duke of Isle of Wight. The choice of William Duke and the younger John Duke of Isle of Wight to live next door to one another in both VA and NC, and not next door to any of the other Duke families, had always seemed to me inadequately explained by Mrs. Brandenberger, who placed William in the Duke-Byrd family instead of the family of John Duke of Isle of Wight. To be brutally frank, Mrs. Brandenberger did not want to be descended from a Duke family known to have had a member (Bridget Duke, mother of the younger John) on the parish charity rolls, but instead preferred the socially prominent Duke-Byrd connection. Many have been tempted to see their data through lenses like this, her mistakes are certainly not unique to her. In any case, Group 4 in the DNA study is actually the group descended from the Col. Duke/Capt. Henry Duke line, and is also the line associated with the famous Duke family of NC that founded American Tobacco Company. A few members of Group 4 may be "accidental" matches within a very common yDNA haplogroup, but the core of the family is pretty clearly the Col. Duke line. If William Duke of VA and NC had been a son of James Duke and Mary Byrd, his descendants should fall in this Group 4, rather than Group 2. If you're not familiar with yDNA, I'll add that Group 2 is Haplogroup I and Group 4 is Haplogroup R1b -- they haven't shared a common ancestor in the direct male line in the past 40,000 years or so.. He was born in 1675 at Charles City County, Virginia. He married Mary Elizabeth Byrd, daughter of William Byrd I and Mary (Maria) Horsmanden, in 1700 at Charles City County, Virginia. James Duke died in 1751 at Charles City County, Virginia.

     Mary Elizabeth Byrd was born on 26 February 1683 at Charles City County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Byrd I and Mary (Maria) Horsmanden. Mary Elizabeth Byrd married James Duke in 1700 at Charles City County, Virginia. Mary Elizabeth Byrd died in 1721 at Virginia.

     William Byrd I was born circa 1652 at London, England. He married Mary (Maria) Horsmanden, daughter of Col. Warham Horsmanden and Susannah (Susan) Beeching, circa 1673; [her 2nd marriage]. William Byrd I died on 4 December 1704 at Charles City County, Virginia. He was buried at Westover.

     Mary (Maria) Horsmanden was born in 1652. She was the daughter of Col. Warham Horsmanden and Susannah (Susan) Beeching.² Mary (Maria) Horsmanden married William Byrd I circa 1673; [her 2nd marriage]. Mary (Maria) Horsmanden died on 9 November 1699.

     Col. Warham Horsmanden was baptized on 5 September 1628 at Ulcombe, Co. Kent.² He was the son of Reverend Daniel Horsmanden and Ursula St. Leger. Col. Warham Horsmanden married Susannah (Susan) Beeching on 27 February 1650/51 at St. Mary, London, Somerset.² Col. Warham Horsmanden died in 1691 at Purleigh, Co. Essex.²

     Susannah (Susan) Beeching married Col. Warham Horsmanden, son of Reverend Daniel Horsmanden and Ursula St. Leger, on 27 February 1650/51 at St. Mary, London, Somerset.¹ Susannah (Susan) Beeching died in 1691.¹

     Kenneth Hampton Cole was born on 5 July 1904 at Vernon, New Jersey. He was the son of Electus Shimer Cole and Nina Stewart Hampton. Kenneth Hampton Cole married Jane Elizabeth Dunlap in 1936 at Newton, New Jersey. Kenneth Hampton Cole died in December 1981 at Delray Beach, Florida, at age 77.

     Jane Elizabeth Dunlap was born in 1913 at Newton, New Jersey. She married Kenneth Hampton Cole, son of Electus Shimer Cole and Nina Stewart Hampton, in 1936 at Newton, New Jersey. Jane Elizabeth Dunlap died in October 2000 at Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

     Electus Shimer Cole was born on 3 January 1878 at Montague, New Jersey. He was the son of George Nelden Cole and Emily Kyte. Electus Shimer Cole married Nina Stewart Hampton on 24 December 1902.

     Nina Stewart Hampton was born on 18 February 1880 at Frenchtown, New Jersey. She married Electus Shimer Cole, son of George Nelden Cole and Emily Kyte, on 24 December 1902.

     George Nelden Cole was born in 1851 at probably, Hainesville, New Jersey. He was the son of Benjamin Haines Cole and Margaret van Etten. George Nelden Cole married Emily Kyte before 1875 at probably, Pike County, Pennsylvania. George Nelden Cole died on 9 March 1933 at probably, Montague, New Jersey.

     Emily Kyte died at probably, Montague, New Jersey. She was born in 1854 at probably, Frenchtown, New Jersey. She married George Nelden Cole, son of Benjamin Haines Cole and Margaret van Etten, before 1875 at probably, Pike County, Pennsylvania.

     Benjamin Haines Cole was born on 7 July 1816 at Montague, New Jersey. He was the son of Thomas Jefferson Cole and Susan Haines. Benjamin Haines Cole married Margaret van Etten on 26 October 1839 at Pike County, Pennsylvania. Benjamin Haines Cole died on 15 April 1898 at Montague, New Jersey, at age 81.

     Margaret van Etten was born on 19 October 1818 at Pike County, Pennsylvania. She married Benjamin Haines Cole, son of Thomas Jefferson Cole and Susan Haines, on 26 October 1839 at Pike County, Pennsylvania. Margaret van Etten died on 29 December 1892 at Montague, New Jersey, at age 74.

     Thomas Jefferson Cole was born on 5 April 1790 at Deerpark, New York. He was the son of William Cole and Sara Wells. Thomas Jefferson Cole was baptized on 15 May 1790. He married Susan Haines before 1816. Thomas Jefferson Cole died circa March 1865 at Montague, New Jersey.
