Rev. Dixon A. Barr, priest and educator

The Rev. Dixon A. Barr, assistant priest at St. Hubert's Episcopal Church and a former longtime dean of the Eastern Kentucky University College of Education, died Thursday at University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was 77.

Rev. Barr also was the former canon of Christ Church Cathedral and former head of the Diocesan School of Ministry.

He was a member and leader in many genealogical and hereditary societies, and lectured and taught at conferences of those organizations. Among those organizations are the General Society of Mayflower Descendants; National Society of Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; National Huguenot Society; National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; First Families of Kentucky; National Genealogical Society; and Kentucky Genealogical Society.

A native of Crown Point, Ind., he received an undergraduate degree from Ball State University and a master's degree and doctorate from Columbia University.

Rev. Barr is survived by his wife, Frances Keller Barr; a daughter, Elizabeth Barr Masters of Lexington; two sons, Edward S. Barr of Lexington and John McKee Barr of Houston; a stepdaughter, Susan Swinford Bullard of Lexington; two stepsons, C. William Swinford Jr. and Rodman Keenan Swinford, both of Lexington; four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Christ Church Cathedral. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday at thechurch. Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Hubert's Episcopal Church. W.R. Milward Mortuary - Broadway is handling arrangements.
