OCTAGON

The Octagon at Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), along with the main building and the royal hall was built under Charlemagne's personal supervision, after Roman models and was designed by Einhard; a cleric and Charlemagne's biographer. Built between 789 and 794 and dedicated in 805, it is perhaps the finestsurviving example of Carolingian architecture reflecting Byzantine style. The stone throne is shown through the opening in the bronze parape. The use of marble was a deliberate attempt at creating an impression of magnificence. The chapel is incorporated into today's Aachen Cathedral.
