TALISMAN

Ninth century

2 3/4 by 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches

The talisman, an object believed to confer on the bearer supernatural powers or protection, is supposed to have been found in Charlemagne's tomb when it was opened in 1166. The tiny relic of the True Cross is set in a blue ground and enclosed by a jewel-studded band of fine filigree. The setting of the stones and the excellence of the filigree are typical of the high standards attained by the jewelers of the Carolingian era.
